Your Choices
Last updated: 2026-05-12
This page summarizes the privacy controls you have across Buena Labs services, including the mrkdwn application and the buenalabs.io website. For the underlying policies, see our Privacy Policy.
1. Analytics Opt-Out
With your consent, mrkdwn collects anonymized usage events (feature usage, screen views, app version, OS version, language) to help us prioritize improvements. These events contain no note content, file names, or personal data.
To opt out in the app:
- Open mrkdwn → Settings → Privacy
- Turn off Share Anonymous Usage Data
Disabling analytics does not affect any feature. Crash reports are governed separately (see below) — opting out of analytics does not opt you out of crash reports.
Crash Reports
Crash reports help us fix bugs you encounter. They include stack traces and device information, but never note contents. To opt out:
- Open mrkdwn → Settings → Privacy
- Turn off Share Crash Reports
Website
The buenalabs.io website uses privacy-respecting analytics with no cookies and no individual tracking. We honor the Do Not Track browser signal — if it is enabled, your visit is excluded from aggregate counts.
2. AI Data Preferences
When you use mrkdwn's AI features, your prompt and any selected content are sent to the AI provider you choose. By default this is Anthropic (Claude); you can switch providers or use a local model.
Use AI Selectively
- AI features are off by default — they activate only when you invoke them (e.g., slash commands, the AI panel)
- Each request sends only the content you select plus your prompt — never your entire note library
- We do not store or relay AI requests on our servers — they go directly to the provider
Use a Local Model for Zero Cloud Sharing
If you do not want any AI data leaving your device, switch to a local provider:
- mrkdwn → Settings → AI → Provider
- Select Ollama or LM Studio (both run on your machine)
Provider Privacy Policies
3. Sync Preferences
Cloud sync is off by default. mrkdwn stores notes as plain Markdown files on your device, and you choose whether and how to sync them.
Manage Sync
- Enable / disable: mrkdwn → Settings → Sync
- Choose provider: currently Apple iCloud Drive (Google Drive is planned)
- Selective sync: sync specific folders rather than your whole library
When You Turn Sync Off
Your local files are untouched. Files already synced to your provider remain there under your account; you can remove them from the provider's interface. mrkdwn does not delete cloud-side files automatically when sync is disabled, to prevent accidental data loss.
To remove all cloud-synced data through us, see our Data Deletion page.
4. Communication Preferences
- If you have an account, we send only essential service emails (security alerts, billing receipts, policy changes). We do not send marketing emails to account holders by default.
- If you opt into our newsletter (e.g., from the website footer), you can unsubscribe via the link in any newsletter email.
- To stop receiving non-essential email, email privacy@buenalabs.io.
In-App Notifications
- Configure per-category notifications in mrkdwn → Settings → Notifications
- System-level permission can be revoked in your OS settings (macOS System Settings → Notifications → mrkdwn)
5. Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information (CCPA)
Buena Labs does not sell or share personal information. We do not engage in cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not transfer your data to advertisers or data brokers.
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, California residents have additional rights:
- Right to know — request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Right to delete — request deletion via our Data Deletion page
- Right to correct — request correction of inaccurate information
- Right to opt out — opt out of analytics in mrkdwn → Settings → Privacy
- Right to non-discrimination — we will not deny you service for exercising these rights
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@buenalabs.io. We will respond within 45 days as required by CCPA.
6. Authorized Agents
California residents may use an authorized agent to make CCPA requests. We will require written authorization and verify the agent's identity before fulfilling the request.
