Introducing Buena Labs — a creative studio building apps, typefaces, and open-source tools for writers and developers.
We started Buena Labs because the tools we wanted didn’t exist.
Markdown editors that worked well on desktop fell apart on mobile. Apps with great mobile UX lacked the features writers need. And everything was locked into proprietary formats or required an internet connection to function.
What we’re building
Two things, to start:
mrkdwn — a cross-platform markdown editor with local-first storage, AI-native writing assistance, and encrypted web publishing. Your files stay on your machine as plain Markdown. No lock-in, no proprietary formats.
buena mono — a monospaced typeface designed for the place where writing and code meet. Variable font with 3 axes, coding ligatures, small caps, and support for 80+ languages. Released under the SIL Open Font License.
Our values
We care about a few things deeply:
- Local-first. Plain files as source of truth. Your work lives on your machine.
- Privacy. Encryption at rest and in transit. No telemetry without consent.
- Craft. Thoughtful defaults, keyboard-first UX, writer-optimized typography.
- Openness. Open standards, open source, portable data.
What’s next
We’re heads-down building. mrkdwn is in active development across macOS, iOS, Android, and Windows. buena mono is being drawn glyph by glyph. We’ll share progress here as we go.
